Primrose Elementary (Grades K-1)
SOCIAL STUDIES
At Primrose, our Social Studies program begins with the development of self-awareness – what makes each of us unique along with an appreciation of diversity. It continues with the students’ active participation in the skills needed to develop their roles as productive citizens of the school, local and global communities. It encourages an awareness of and connection to past events through interaction with literature, active involvement with the local community, interviewing and inquiry. At the second grade level, research skills are integrated into this NYS standards based curriculum.
Somers Intermediate School (Grade 2-5)
SOCIAL STUDIES
Through our social studies program, students explore basic concepts related to both ancient and current communities throughout the world, the history of New York State, and the early history of our nation. Units of study focus on “essential questions." These questions emphasize the economic, social and political influences people have on one another and how those values influence how their wants and needs are met. Classroom instruction emphasizes depth of understanding of important ideas and concepts. Many of the writing skills taught during ELA time are further fostered in the Social Studies content area.
Somers Middle School (Grades 6-8)
In sixth grade students are introduced to ancient civilizations, beginning with Mesopotamia and ending with the Middle Ages. They begin to work with primary and secondary sources as well as develop thematic essays. Seventh and eighth grade social studies is a two-year course in American history. The first half covers the American Revolution through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Industrial Revolution. The second half begins with immigration in the 1890’s and takes students up to 20th century America. Instruction stresses essay writing, and introduces students to document-based questions (DBQ), and the use of primary sources.
Somers High School (Grades 9-12)
Instructionally, the department has instituted our SKILLS PACKET FOR SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNERS that has reading, writing, and test-taking skills, rubrics for research and essays, an essay scoring code for student improvement, tips for writing more enriched essays and other items to help students improve their learning. The packet is an on-going work of the department. Students utilize a "research protocol" for performance based research projects in content areas. The ultimate goal of the department is to develop critical and creative thinking skills. Students read and analyze primary and secondary sources, participate in simulations, develop research techniques, work in cooperative groups, and create performance based projects in which they apply, evaluate and synthesize what they learn. In their research, students will use a variety of print and electronic resources such as on-line databases, reference CD-Roms and the Internet.
